Our philosophy at Equilibrium Architecture is exactly what the name implies. Balance. We strive to achieve balance in the architectural solution that we provide for our clients. This is a balance of many factors; Architectural Character, Context, Site, Slope, Orientation, Access, Vegetation, etc. as well as other factors that are also relevant to design; Budget, Value, Energy Efficiency, Sustainability, Maintainability, and any other factors that play into the design and decision making process.

We believe that every solution is different for every person and that we need to take our inspiration from the earth on which we intend to build. It is better to work with the land than to force it into the shape we want it to be. By observing the natural elements of the building site, many of the design questions can be instantly made. The land will tell you where to locate most of the spaces so that your home or building will work with the natural flow of the site.

Once these main forces are identified and the design begins to take shape, then comes the time to work on the reality of building in the location that has been selected using materials that are in harmony with the surrounding environment. We try to look at how a building such as yours would have been constructed historically; then we take inspiration from this. For Example; typically when this region was settled, homes and buildings were constructed on top of stone foundations. Sometimes these were actually stacked stone, but usually these were just large stones situated to support wood framing. This is the part of the reason that a stone base on a house or commercial structure is very visually appealing. It anchors the building to the earth and gives it a very permanent appearance. It also protects the structure from the blowing and drifting snow that is prevalent here in the mountains of Colorado. This is the kind of reasoning we try to apply to our decision making process.
